Letter of SupportCall on your Senator to support legislation that keeps clean diesel in mind.
Dear Senator,
As legislation on creating comprehensive energy and climate policy continues to be introduced and discussed in the Senate, I ask that you keep in mind the range of technologies that can help our country reduce its emissions and energy footprint, including clean diesel vehicles. So far, most of the bills that have been introduced included provisions that increase research and development for electric and compressed natural gas vehicles, but fail to recognize the benefits of clean diesel cars, including increased fuel efficiency, current availability and reduced need for infrastructure development. I ask you to encourage the development and passage of technology-neutral policies that that reward innovation and maximize fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the U.S. while providing consumers with choices in the marketplace.
By failing to insert technology-neutral policies into comprehensive energy legislation, our country will face limitations that stifle innovation, creativity and the development of interim solutions as other vehicle technologies are scaled for the marketplace. If the government continues to single out specific technologies for research and development, they will be committing to future investments in developing vast amounts of infrastructure to meet the needs of some alternative fueled vehicles. Clean diesel vehicles, on the other hand, don’t require the development of additional infrastructure with 40 percent of all fuel retailers offering diesel pumps in the U.S. today, making it available at more than 80,000 unique distribution points. Additionally, clean diesel cars currently on the market can average 30 percent better fuel economy and reduce C02 emissions by nearly 25 percent when compared to a traditional gasoline engine.
Instead of obstructing innovation and the sale of fuel-efficient vehicle technologies currently on the market, the Senate must move quickly to ensure the enactment of technology-neutral policies that encourage the development and improvement of all passenger vehicle technologies from clean diesel technology to electric vehicles. I believe that there is more than one way to improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles on the road in the U.S. today, and the government should provide its citizens with options that fit their lifestyle while reducing the nation’s carbon footprint and dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
Sincerely,
